Cold Storage Facility Refitting

Project Overview

Shaw Welding provided structural steel fabrication, miscellaneous metals fabrication, engineering, and installation services for the approximately 300,000-square-foot refit of a cold storage facility in Taunton, MA.

The project involved extensive structural modifications to accommodate 16 new large-scale cooling units, along with thousands of feet of structural reinforcement, insulated metal panel (IMP) wall support, custom door framing, equipment protection, and specialized access systems.

Working closely with the general contractor and other project partners, our team engineered and fabricated solutions designed to maintain the project schedule while accommodating the unique requirements of a large-scale refrigerated facility.

Scope of Work

Structural Steel Reinforcement for Cooling Equipment

Shaw Welding performed extensive steel joist reinforcement to support 16 additional large cooling units. The work required several thousand linear feet of additional angle and rod reinforcement, along with custom structural modifications to accommodate the new equipment.

We also fabricated and installed custom roof frames for all 16 cooling units, providing the structural support required for the new rooftop equipment.

IMP Wall Support

The project included approximately 7,000 linear feet of insulated metal panel (IMP) wall support, incorporating 50-foot columns and cross-support framing.

To address the installation sequencing challenges associated with the large-scale IMP wall system, Shaw Welding proposed a two-piece wall support solution. After receiving approval from both the general contractor and IMP wall manufacturer, we engineered and fabricated the support system in two sections.

This approach allowed other subcontractors to continue their work without waiting for the entire wall support system to be completed, helping keep the overall project on schedule.

Custom Door Frames & Forklift Protection

Shaw Welding designed and fabricated 14 custom door frame support systems to accommodate the customer’s specified Rytec doors.

We also fabricated and installed 14 overhead door frame protection systems designed to help mitigate forklift impacts around critical entry and exit points throughout the facility.

Specialized Access & Miscellaneous Metals

Additional miscellaneous metals work included:

  • Self-supporting ships ladder providing access from the freezer roof to the building roof, including in-house design, engineering, fabrication, and installation.

  • Hidden structural beam supporting a removable interior office wall partition.

  • Removable exterior bollards providing flexible protection around the facility.

Project Schedule

The original project schedule anticipated approximately six months of work. Shaw Welding completed its scope in four months, finishing approximately two months ahead of the anticipated schedule.

Engineering & Fabrication Solutions

One of the key challenges on this project was coordinating structural steel and miscellaneous metals work around an active construction schedule with multiple trades working simultaneously.

Shaw Welding’s ability to design, engineer, fabricate, and install specialized steel components in-house allowed our team to develop solutions quickly and adapt to field conditions. Our proposed two-piece IMP wall support system is one example of how early coordination and practical fabrication expertise can help eliminate construction delays.

The Result

By combining structural steel reinforcement, miscellaneous metals fabrication, in-house engineering, and field installation, Shaw Welding helped deliver a complex cold storage facility refit efficiently and ahead of schedule.

The project demonstrates our ability to execute large-scale commercial steel fabrication and miscellaneous metals projects in Massachusetts, particularly projects involving demanding schedules, specialized equipment, structural modifications, and coordination among multiple trades.
